Richard Smith was stage manager with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "B" (later "C") Company, touring The Pirates of Penzance from January to December 1881, and with Carte's No. 1 "Patience" Company from March to December 1882. In March 1882 he went on for a spell as Mr. Bunthorne's Solicitor in Patience.
