THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANYClarence J. Stanley (1882-83) Clarence J. Stanley (later known as Clarence J. Sounes) appeared on tour for the better part of two seasons with the D'Oyly Carte organization. He took his first parts in companion pieces with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 1 "Pirates" Company on tour from April to December 1882:Mr. Sandford in Thomas Haile Lacy's play A Silent Woman, and an undetermined part in B. T. Hughes & William Robinson's "musical eccentricity" My Luck. When No. 1 "Pirates" was disbanded in December 1882, Stanley joined Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 2 "Iolanthe" Company for the first provincial production of Iolanthe. He played the Earl of Mountararat until December 1883, when, it appears, he left the Company. The following year, as Clarence Sounes, he appeared in London as Sergeant Pipeclay in James Mortimer & Edward Solomon's comic opera Polly (Novelty and Empire Theatres, October-December 1884). |
