Three more Gilbert plays. We now have the scripts of the 1868 extravaganza, The Merry Zingara or The Tipsy Gipsy and the Pipsy Wipsy; the 1870 musical play,The Gentleman in Black and the 1871 comedy, On Guard.

The Pretty Druidess or The Mother, the Maid, and the Mistletoe Bough. We now have available the script of Gilbert's extravaganza which was performed on the opening night of the Charing Cross Theatre, 19 June, 1869.

Robert the Devil or The Nun, the Dun, and the Son of a Gun. We have added the script of Gilbert's burlesque of Meyebeer's opera Robert Le Diable which opened at the Gaiety Theatre on 21st December 1868.

The Sorcerer Vocal Score. Following the success of our Princess Ida score, there is now a Gilbert and Sullivan Archive Edition of The Sorcerer, including all the music from both the 1877 and 1884 versions, together with all the dialogue and comprehensive notes outlining the differences between the two versions and other variants in the text, available from Lulu.

Sullivan's Incidental Music to Shakespeare's Macbeth. We have had a MIDI file of the overture, sequenced by Geoff Colmer for some time. You can now browse through the "Souvenir" of the production whilst listening to the MIDI file, thanks to John Sands who provided the scans.

Fallen Fairies. There are now images in our "Virtual Museum." of a programme from the run of this Gilbert and German opera at the Savoy issued after Nancy McIntosh had been replaced as Selene.

Guinness Advertising. In 1961, the makers of the well known Irish stout issued a booklet extolling the virtues of their product. Images of this booklet have now been added to the "Advertising" gallery in our "Virtual Museum."

The Nautch Girl. There are now images in our Museum section of a programme from the original production of this opera by Grundy and Solomon from the period when Barrington and Bond were away from the Savoy.

The Rose of Persia. Elise Curran has sent us a recording, made in December 2005 with the Camerata Santa Dorotea conducted by Robin Gordon-Powell, of the aria in its original key with the Yaw cadenza. Her performance received an enthusiastic ovation lasting well over a minute!

The Carp. Alfred Cellier's music to this Savoy curtain-raiser having been lost, Quade Winter has composed a new and original score. He has now supplied fully orchestrated MIDI files of his score.

His Majesty. There are now images in our Museum section of a programme from the original production of this opera by Burnand, Lehmann and Mackenzie which ran for just over 60 performances at the Savoy in 1897.

Harlequin Cock-Robin and Jenny Wren or Fortunatus and the Water of Life, the Three Bears, the Three Gifts, the Three Wishes, and the Little Man who Woo'd the Little Maid. We have added the script of this pantomime written by Gilbert for the Lyceum Theatre in 1867.

Original Production Programmes. John Sands has provided scans of an impressive collection of programmes from the original productions of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas and other operas which had their first productions at the Savoy. This is the first part of a "Virtual Museum" which will eventually include illustrations of a wide range of memorabilia. At present it is necessary to obtain a password to enter the museum by sending an email to the Curator. In requesting a password you undertake not to post the images on any other website without permission.

Jane Annie Reviews. Scott Farrell has sent us copies of various reviews of the original production of this piece which ran for 50 performances at the savoy in 1893. None of them is able to find much to praise in the production!

Savoy Theatre. Robert Watson has sent us some pictures of the Savoy Theatre as it was in Gilbert's and Sullivan's day and a picture of the newly rebuilt auditorium of 1929.

Vocal Scores on the Internet Archive. A number of Vocal Scores of operettas and musicals have been made available on the Inyernet Archive. Of particular interest to Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts are nineteenth century scores of Cox and Box (Boosey), The Contrabandista (Boosey), H.M.S. Pinafore (Metzler), The Pirates of Penzance (Stoddart), and The Mikado (Pond).

The Fortune Hunter and The Fairy's Dilemma (originally titled "Harlequin and the Fairy's Dilemma") . The scripts of these two plays by Gilbert, 1897 and 1904 respectively,are now available on the Archive.

Fallen Fairies. Arthur Robinson has donated a scanned score of this opera which was produced at the Savoy on 15th December 1909. It was Gilbert's last libretto for the stage and has a score by Edward German. In addition, there is a score of the cut song, which was not published in the vocal score, "Oh love that rulest."

Pretty Polly. by Basil Hood and François Cellier played as a curtain raiser at the Savoy with The Rose of Persia and during the 1900 revival of Patience. We have added a copy of the libretto.

His Excellency. Arthur Robinson has donated a scanned score [PDF, 18MB] of this opera by W. S. Gilbert, with music by Frank Osmond Carr which was produced at the Lyric Theatre on October 27, 1894, with a cast including such familiar faces from the Savoy as George Grossmith (as Griffenfeld), Rutland Barrington (as the Regent), and Jessie Bond.

The Yeomen of the Guard. The Kalmus orchestral parts have Phœbe's two solos both in their original keys and transposed up one tone. The vocal score only provides them only in the original key. If a soprano is cast as Phœbe, then these two transpositions by Larry Byler would be useful: When maiden loves [PDF, 76KB] and Were I thy bride [PDF 60KB].

The Light of the World. We have added MIDI files of the first part of Sulivan's Oratorio, first performed at the Birmingham Music Festival of 1873. The first part compises 27 numbers, approximately two thirds of the score.

Arrangements for piano duet. The popularity of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas led to arrangements of the music being made for dancing. These were published both for solo piano and piano duet. David Stone has made available three of these: HMS Pinafore Waltz, The Mikado Lancers and The Gondoliers Lancers. Scroll down the page to the subsection headed "The Music".

Foggerty's Fairy. This play by Gilbert opened at the Criterion Theatre, London, on 15th December 1881. Adam Cuerden has found a review of the play in the Illustrated and Dramatic News of 24th December 1881.

A Society Clown. George Grossmith's book of reminiscences published in 1888. Second hand copies of the original edition are now difficult to find. The book is available to read on line, and a printed version is also available from Lulu.

1926 D'Oyly Carte Season at the Prince's Theatre. 1926 saw the introduction of the famous Rickett's costumes for The Mikado. Costumes from these designs were used until the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company closed in 1982 and can be seen in the 1966 film.

1919-20 D'Oyly Carte Season at the Prince's Theatre. In 1919, after an absence of ten years from London's West End, the Gilbert and Sullivan Operas were brought back in a triumphant season.

1921-22 D'Oyly Carte Season at the Prince's Theatre. During this season, Ruddigore received its first revival in London and Cox and Box was added to the repertoir. A souvenir brochure was issued to commemorate the season.

1929-30 D'Oyly Carte Season at the Savoy. In 1929, Rupert D'Oyly Carte rebuilt the Savoy Theatre in the fashionable 'Art Deco' style and re-opened it with a production of The Gondoliers with new costumes designed by Charles Ricketts. A coloured souvenir brochure was issued to commemorate the season.

Hush-a-Bye Baby, on the Tree Top or Harlequin Fortunia, King Frog of Frog Island, and the Magic Toys of Lowther Arcade. Gilbert wrote this pantomime for Astley's Theatre in 1866 with written with Charles Millard. It was included in a set of illustrations of pantomimes of the season published by The Illustrated London News. It has been unearthed, thanks to the diligent research of Adam Cuerden.

Overture "Di Ballo" — George Pollen has sequenced a MIDI file of this orchestral work composed by Sullivan for the 1870 Birmingham Festival.

HMS Pinafore, Act II, No. 13 ("Fair moon, to thee I sing") is in D major in the vocal score, but the orchestral parts are in C major. Larry Byler has provided a transposition of the vocal score into the lower key.
