THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Marie Balfour, real name Mary Simkins, was a music hall performer, who had a brief stint as a touring chorister with the D'Oyly Carte organization. She was on tour with Mr. D’Oyly Carte’s “C” Company in Yorkshire on 3 April 1881, at the time of the 1881 British census. She shared a music hall act with her brother, Albert Simkins, early in her career, before assuming her stage name around 1880.
