Contralto Elizabeth Shelley was known as Barbara Shelley when she joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in November 1959. In 1961 she took Elizabeth for her stage name. She deputized on occasion in early 1963 as Kate in The Pirates of Penzance and Giulia in The Gondoliers but left the D'Oyly Carte in June of that year. Miss Shelley later appeared with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
