chapter 1:

It is advisable to read chapter 1 and see if you have any questions about it. These sections cover material with which you ought to be familiar from previous courses, but students often do come into this class still having problems with it. If you have difficulties with a section in chapter 1, attempting some odd problems might be a good strategy. I may lecture on some of these sections later when it seems appropriate. The chapter 1 review test on p. 120 might be a useful resource (answers starting on p. A7).
