Class meetings: MWF 1:40 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. in room B 222.

Textbook: Real and Functional Analysis by Serge Lang, Third Edition, Graduate Texts in Mathematics 142, Springer 1993. Further literature will be recommended later.

Office hours: MWF from 11:40 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., TTh 1:40 pm - 2:30 pm, before or after class, or by appointment. Drop ins are welcome any time.

Blackboard Support: The class will be supported by Blackboard. The use of Blackboard will give you up to date access to your grades. Please check on Blackboard on a regular basis. Blackboard is also an excellent place for discussions.

Content and timeline: It is planned to cover Part One: General Topology, Part Two: Banach and Hilbert spaces, Part Four: Calculus, and Chapter VI: The General Integral from Part Three: Integration. Approximate timeline: January 21-30 (Part One), February 4-18 (Part Two), February 20-March 11 (Part IV), March 16-April 22 (Chapter VI, VII from Part Three), April 24-May 1 (Presentations), May 4-6 (Selected topics from Part Three).

Goals: The goal is to develop a solid foundation of the ideas of Analysis. This will help you in reading original literature in Applied and Pure Mathematics, and Statistics. The Bibliography of the book reflects this goal showing papers of original research of the 1960's. Moreover the course intends to help you to develop further proof-writing skills, which are necessary for successfully writing a master's thesis in any research direction.

Grading policy: Your final grade will be determined by your work in four areas
